Nord Families,
What an exciting few weeks it has been at Nord! Thank you for your incredible support of our Valentine’s Day parties and Heart Health Spirit Week. The energy in our building has been amazing, and it continues to be clear how fortunate we are to have such outstanding students, staff, and families!
March is shaping up to be another exciting month. Our fourth graders are gearing up for their field trip to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, our PTO dances are just around the corner, and our fourth graders will proudly present their Famous Ohioans projects later in the month. There is much to look forward to!
Congratulations to our February Comet Impact Staff Member of the Month, Mrs. McGee! She goes above and beyond to support our students and staff. |
Thank you to our students and families for making our Kids Heart Challenge and Heart Health Spirit Week such a success! Your enthusiasm, participation, and generosity helped make the week both fun and meaningful. Our students especially enjoyed the assembly on February 19th presented by the American Heart Association, where they learned even more about heart health. We are proud of our Nord students for supporting such a great cause! There is still time to complete Finn's Mission by clicking the link below to sign up.

Mrs. Costello's students were featured in Mr. Molnar's most recent Community Update. Check out the feature below:
Mrs. Costello’s students have been hard at work bringing their Coffee Cart Project to life...and what an incredible job they did! From start to finish, students helped create a plan, design a Google Form for staff orders, and prepare delicious homemade treats including muffins, cookies, cake pops, brownies, and rice krispie treats. They even served coffee and hot chocolate to staff members!
The students proudly created a name for their coffee cart and designed and decorated their own sign to make it official.
Beyond the sweet treats, this project provided meaningful, real-world learning experiences. Students practiced communication, followed multi-step directions, built social skills, and developed greater independence while gaining confidence and learning responsibility. Most importantly, they were able to contribute in a positive and impactful way to our school community. We are so proud of their hard work and teamwork! |

Throughout February, Walter G. Nord School proudly celebrated Black History Month by recognizing the achievements, contributions, and lasting impact of African American leaders, innovators, and trailblazers. Students engaged in meaningful discussions and learning activities that honored history while inspiring our future. We are proud to celebrate the diversity, culture, and strength that enrich our school community. |

This edition of Nord News features the fourth grade team of Mrs. Mullen, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Stellwagen! |
|
|
Mrs. Mullen is in her 24th year teaching 4th grade ELA in Amherst and her 34th year in education overall. Her husband, Mr. Mullen, teaches 5th grade math at Nord, making education a true family affair in their home. They have two wonderful children: their son, Danny (24), who lives in California, and their daughter, Maeve (21), a junior at John Carroll University. Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Mullen enjoys spending time with her family, listening to music and podcasts, traveling, and attending concerts whenever she can. Each school year, she strives to ensure that every student feels welcomed, valued, and supported in her classroom. Creating a positive environment where all learners can grow in confidence and develop a love of learning is always her top priority.
Mrs. Smith is a fourth-grade math teacher at Walter G. Nord School and is currently in her sixth year in the district and her tenth year in education overall. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she serves as the head of both the Social Committee and the Sunshine Committee at Nord, helping foster a positive and supportive staff culture.
Outside of school, Mrs. Smith enjoys spending time with her husband, Ryan, and their two golden retrievers, Honey and Murphy. In her free time, she loves reading, cooking, practicing Pilates, and running. This school year, Mrs. Smith’s goal is to build confident math learners by helping her students strengthen their problem-solving skills and develop a positive mindset when facing challenges.
Mrs. Stellwagen is a fourth-grade Science and Social Studies teacher at Walter G. Nord School. She completed her student teaching at Nord in 2012, making it especially meaningful to continue her educational career where it first began. She is currently in her 13th year in education, with ten of those years spent in the Amherst School District. While much of her career has focused on teaching English Language Arts, she has spent the past three years teaching Science and Social Studies and has truly enjoyed the hands-on learning opportunities these subjects provide.
Prior to teaching fourth grade in Amherst, Mrs. Stellwagen taught fifth and seventh grades in Chardon, Ohio. Outside of school, she and her husband will celebrate seven years of marriage in June. They have two young children—a four-year-old daughter, Emmy, and a two-year-old son, Everett—who keep them busy and bring tremendous joy to their lives.
Each year, Mrs. Stellwagen’s goal is to create a classroom environment rooted in stability, creativity, and kindness—one that supports both academic achievement and emotional growth. She strives to ensure that every student feels safe, valued, and inspired to take meaningful risks in their learning. |
