A New Era of Innovation Begins at Steele!
What began as an idea a few years back—a small conversation about creating a makerspace—has transformed into something extraordinary at Marion L. Steele High School. On Wednesday, the school officially opened its brand-new Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics Space, marking a major milestone for students, staff, and the entire Amherst community.
Robotics and Automation Instructor John Agostinelli recalls those early conversations as the spark that ignited years of planning, collaboration, and growth. Today, that spark has become a vibrant learning hub filled with 3D printers, automation equipment, and technology that mirrors real-world industry settings.
The project became a reality thanks to a $1.6 million grant from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, awarded last fall. Since then, the school has been hard at work ordering equipment, building out the space, and preparing to expand opportunities in advanced manufacturing and robotics.
Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting took place in the midst of Manufacturing Month, perfectly symbolizing Amherst’s commitment to preparing students for high-demand careers. The celebration featured remarks from several guests, including Tony Gallo, former President and CEO of the Lorain County Chamber of Commerce; a representative from Congressman Bob Latta’s office; Marty Gallagher; and John Agostinelli himself.
In partnership with Lorain County Community College, Amherst students can now earn high school and college credit—along with industry-recognized credentials—all before graduation. In just under two years, the program has grown from 14 students to 88, with this year’s students expected to complete over 100 credentials.
As Agostinelli put it, this new space isn’t just about machines and technology—it’s about giving students a place to explore, create, and prepare for the future.
8th Grade Comets Explore History in Gettysburg and Washington, D.C.!
This week, our 8th grade Comets embarked on an unforgettable journey through some of our nation’s most historic landmarks! Their trip began with a powerful visit to the Flight 93 National Memorial, a moving tribute to the heroes of September 11th.
From there, students traveled to Gettysburg, where history came to life. They visited the 29th Ohio Infantry monument, reflected at the Eternal Light Peace Memorial, and explored the Gettysburg Battlefields—even learning about Civil War cannon operation firsthand!
The adventure continued in Washington, D.C., where students toured Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, and visited several of the nation’s most inspiring monuments, including those honoring Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Thomas Jefferson.
Of course, no trip to the capital is complete without seeing the White House and exploring the World War II Memorial, along with several other historic sites.
It was a week filled with learning, reflection, and inspiration—a truly memorable experience for our Comets!
What a Week in Our Amherst Elementary Schools!
Shout out to our FANTASTIC teachers for another awesome week of educating our Comets in the most creative and fun ways!
At Powers Elementary, the Resilience Club met for meaningful activities, and students wrapped up their Classic Tales unit with an Alice in Wonderland–themed tea party fit for a storybook! Our Kindergarteners also enjoyed a beautiful fall walk to Beaver Creek Park exploring nature in all its fall glory.
Over at Nord, our 4th graders mastered Hot Cross Buns on the recorder — and celebrated in the sweetest way possible… with Hawaiian Sweet Rolls! Students also had fun with an edible excavation activity and a lively game of Musical Note Uno in music class!
And these are just a few of the amazing things that occurred this week. What an amazing week to be a Comet!
