Powers Elementary School Earns 2026 Governor’s Science of Reading Champion Award! |
Our very own Powers Elementary School was recently recognized as the 2026 Governor’s Science of Reading Champion!
This prestigious designation celebrates our Powers team’s proven commitment to providing every Comet with high-quality literacy instruction aligned with Ohio’s Science of Reading initiative.
Literacy is the foundation of education, and at Powers, that foundation is strong. Through a dedicated focus on evidence-based reading practices, our staff is building confident readers and setting students up for success, not only in the classroom, but well beyond. This recognition highlights the incredible effort to ensure all students have the support and opportunities they need to become proficient readers.
As part of this honor, Powers will receive a celebratory banner and materials recognizing their achievement. We are so proud of the hard work, passion, and dedication shown by our students, staff, and families each day.
Congratulations Powers Elementary!

April is the Month of the Military Child |
We’re proud to recognize and support the 45 military-connected students in Amherst Schools, representing families across the United States Army, United States Navy, United States Air Force, United States Marine Corps, as well as the National Guard and Reserve.
To honor these families, we host two annual events, including our recent Military Breakfast and a family bowling night at Park Lanes. These gatherings create meaningful opportunities for connection, support, and shared experiences.
A special thank you to Mrs. Amanda Sears, Mr. Mike Edwards, Mrs. Elizabeth Fought, and Mr. Edwards’ Navy National Defense Cadets for making this year’s breakfast so memorable. We also appreciate the continued support of Amherst VFW Post 1662.
We’re also excited to share that all four of our schools have earned the Purple Star designation, recognizing a strong commitment to serving military-connected students and families.
Check out the video recap of our Military Breakfast below!

Recently, our Amherst Junior High ROX program partnered with 5th grade ROX students at Walter G. Nord School for their first leadership project—and what an incredible experience it was!
ROX, a program for girls in grades 5–12, focuses on building confidence, independence, and strong friendships while helping students navigate their school years.
During the visit, our AJH ROX students led and supported a self-defense lesson, partnering one-on-one with 5th graders. They encouraged them through the physical skills, helped them find their voices, and guided meaningful conversations about self-worth and why they are worth defending.
This was a full circle moment for many of our junior high students, who began their own ROX journeys in 5th grade.
A big thank you to Mrs. Kremer, Mrs. Krichbaum and Ms. Maiorca for organizing and leading this impactful experience for our Lady Comets!
